San Diego – Aug. 31, 2007 – For the third time in five years, the San Diego Convention Center Corporation (SDCCC) was honored by the City of San Diego with a 2007 Director’s Recycling Award for its efforts to divert waste from landfills and conserve natural resources. The award, presented in June 2007 at the City of San Diego’s 2007 Waste Reduction & Diversion Awards Program, recognizes local businesses and community organizations for innovative waste reduction and environmental protection programs.
“We are committed to supporting and encouraging sustainable practices in our building, including the hosting of environmentally friendly “green” meetings,” said Convention Center Corporation General Manager Brad Gessner. “It’s very gratifying to be recognized by the city for our efforts to date and we will continue to seek out additional ways to recycle and conserve.” SDCCC began its “green” program in 1990, many years ahead of the convention and meeting industry’s growing efforts to implement sustainability policies and programs in convention facilities nationwide.
In 2006 alone, the SDCCC’s policy of “recycle, reduce, reuse,” resulted in 1,050 tons of recycled material or 33 percent of our total waste. We also saved 2.9 kWh through energy upgrades; saved 81,026 gallons of water through conservation; and donated 211 tons of food and unused convention items to local schools and charities. In June 2007, we began a food composting program that is expected to divert 240 tons of prep food scraps annually.
The SDCCC previously won Director’s Recycling Awards in 2003 and 2006.
The San Diego Convention Center Corporation is a public benefit corporation created by the City of San Diego. The Corporation is exclusively responsible for marketing, managing and operating the Convention Center. In its 18-year history, the Convention Center has generated $12.8 billion in economic impact, $270.3 million in tax revenues and continues to serve as San Diego’s premier gathering place.
